Deutsche Post DHL Group is to continue its focus on electro-mobility and its self-developed StreetScooter electric van by doubling production by the end of the year.
Strong customer demand and the number of vehicles required for the company’s own operation in Germany and the rest of Europe means the logistics provider will expand electric vehicle capacity from 10,000 to as many as 20,000. Deutsche Post is to commission another production location in North Rhine-Westphalia to reflect this.
The company is now also selling its own electric vehicles to third parties, which have so far only been optimized for postal operations and delivery purposes. At least half of this year’s annual production is planned for external prospective buyers of the vehicles.
Deutsche Post is to target as potential buyers municipal authorities, strategic partners and large fleet customers in Germany and the rest of Europe to being with, at least doubling its own 2,500 StreetScooter fleet for letter and parcel deliveries this year.
Jürgen Gerdes, board member for Post, eCommerce and Parcel at Deutsche Post DHL Group, commented, “The large demand for the StreetScooter and our own ambitious climate-protection goals have encouraged us to further expand our commitment in the area of electro-mobility and to also make our expertise available to others.
“As a result, we are confirming our aspiration to remain the engine of electro-mobility and to become market leader in green logistics.”
The basic StreetScooter Work model starts at 32,000 (US$33,970), with charging infrastructure provided if requested. The next-largest delivery vehicle, coined the Work XL, is expected to come into the market in 2018 and be sold externally. The StreetScooter e-bikes and e-trikes Work M can now be acquired by third parties.
