Menzies Distribution has begun recycling disused PVC side curtains from its HGVs into bespoke, water-repellent tote bags, rucksacks and toiletry bags.
The waste is tested for upcyclability and processed in the UK before being shipped for manufacture. Menzies has partnered with branding company Aura Brand Solutions to ensure that no Menzies-related branding remains visible on any bags. The first trial of this initiative will divert 17 tons of waste from landfill, saving approximately 30 tons of CO2. Material such as car seatbelts and bicycle innertubes have also been used in the construction of the bags.
This initiative follows Menzies’ December 2021 move to specify fully recyclable vehicle branding for its final-mile vehicle fleet, to improve the logistics sector’s approach to modern livery. Adam Purshall, fleet and procurement director at Menzies, said, “We’re delighted to continue finding new and exciting ways to achieve CO2 savings. Curtains-to-bags and the recyclable livery program show that almost anything is possible when pursuing innovative routes to greater sustainability.”
