Deutsche Post DHL Group has localized its GoGreen program to the Ruhr region of Germany, where it will deploy approximately 30 electric delivery vehicles to service clients in the cities of Duisburg and Essen.
Until now, the carbon emissions from DHL’s GoGreen products have been offset through climate protection projects in developing countries. In recent years, more than 11 billion post and parcel items have been sent using the eco-friendly GoGreen service, resulting in 650,000 tons of CO? being offset on behalf of customers through external climate projection projects.
Now DHL aims to reinvest earnings from GoGreen products into local environmental projects in the Ruhr region, including the deployment of more electric delivery vehicles. In addition, GoGreen business customers in the region will receive individualized certificates to verify and document the emissions generated by the shipment of goods along their supply chains.
Jürgen Gerdes, board member for the post e-commerce parcel division at DHL, said, “GoGreen Regional lends local impact to our larger environmental protection efforts. We believe that this initiative is a sensible approach to combining economy and ecology, both regionally and locally, for the benefit of our customers. For this reason we plan to expand the project to include additional regions throughout Germany.”
Deutsche Post DHL Group aims to improve the carbon efficiency of its own operations and those of its transport subcontractors by 30% by 2020, when compared with 2007.
