As part of its ambitions to halve carbon emissions by 2030, bpost has installed 618 new solar panels on the roof of its Brucargo European Mail Centre in Zaventem, Belgium. The new solar panels, installed in partnership with energy company Earth, have a capacity of 337MWh (36% of the site’s total energy demand) and will cut carbon emissions by hundreds of metric tons per year.
bpost now has 31,544 solar panels installed across its sorting and distribution centers in Belgium – a total of 53,626m2 of installed solar panels producing 9730MWh of energy annually.
The new installation in Zaventem brings the total number of solar panels installed in 2024 to 1,640. Over the past year, Earth has installed solar panels at two other sites: Neder-over-Heembeek (526 solar panels) and Evere (496 solar panels).
Commenting on the installations earlier this year, Jos Donvil, CEO bpost Belgium, said, “At bpost we constantly strive to make our logistics processes more sustainable. Renewable energy is a must, especially given our ambition to slash our carbon emissions by 55% by 2030. Solar energy is a very important part of the mix, given the ever-increasing number of electric vehicles in our fleet. The solar panels also meet some of the energy demand of our sites. Earth is a reliable partner that helps us achieve our targets.”
bpost also announced the opening of its first carbon-neutral building in Evere, Belgium, earlier this year, which will help it to meet its sustainability targets.
