Construction work has started on UPS’s new 4m (US$4.5m) sorting and delivery hub in the city of Lummen in Belgium. The new facility will cover approximately 65,000ft², will be capable of sorting up to 5,000 parcels per hour and will have parking spaces for up to 84 delivery vehicles. Construction is scheduled for completion in early 2018.
Karl Haberkorn, director of UPS Belgium, said, “With Belgium in the top five of the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index of the World, it was an easy decision to choose Lummen as a business location,” said Karl Haberkorn, director of UPS Belgium.
“We are expanding our capacity to continue to meet the growing needs of our customers, thanks in part to the boom in e-commerce. Through this investment, we can continue to guarantee reliability and effectively connect our customers with destinations in the rest of Belgium, Europe and the world.”
UPS has operated in Belgium for more than 30 years and employs approximately 1,200 people in eight offices including the European headquarters of UPS in Brussels. The opening of this new center is a part of the company’s plans to improve the effectiveness of its road transport network in Europe.
Erik Gerits, member of the Executive Committee responsible for the economy of the Limburg province in Belgium, said, “The logistics sector accounts for almost 11,000 jobs and generates 5.4% of the Limburg economy. The arrival of the new distribution center is a new opportunity to create added value and employment. The investment fits perfectly with the 365m (US$412m) that the private sector has invested in Limburg over the past three years.”
