Baltic postal operator Omniva signed a contract with Fives Intralogistics today (April 27) for the installation of a new state-of-the-art sorting system for its flagship delivery hub currently under construction in Tallinn, Estonia.
The sorter will be capable of accepting both small packets and large parcels weighing up to 50kg (110 lb) and will help Omniva to handle the 100% growth predicted for the Baltic parcel market over the next decade. Omniva delivered 40% more parcels through its parcel locker network in 2016, helping it to achieve a 17% increase in revenue for its parcel business.
Ansi Arumeel, a member of Omniva’s management board, said, “The new sorting line will be the most modern in this region and has to meet the expectations imposed on it for the next 15 years to come. As we expect a continued rapid growth of parcel volumes in the coming years, an efficient sorting line is crucial for future success.
“The current sorting line can sort parcels between 32 different regions, but the new one will be able to sort between 400. Among other things, the new sorting line is capable of sorting nearly three times as many parcels in one hour.”
Omniva’s Tallinn logistics center will cover nearly 140,000ft², with room for future expansion. Approximately 200 employees will work in production and 75 in the office. The move to the new building is planned to take place in autumn 2018.
Lorenzo Moroni, CEO of Fives Intralogistics, said, “We are pleased to supply Omniva with the state of the art technology which helps them to take their business a step forward. I hope it is a start of a long and successful cooperation.”
In 2016, the Omniva employed an average of 2,244 employees in the Baltic region. The turnover of the group amounted to 95.8m (US$104m) in 2016.
