Parcel delivery provider DPD Germany is once again expecting record parcel volumes this Christmas with an estimated 15% growth over the same period last year. DPD carries up to 50% more parcels on peak days in the run-up to Christmas than on an average day, and as such, is calling on local councils to provide privileged access to municipal parking areas to help improve operations.
Boris Winkelmann, CEO of DPD Germany, said, “During the Christmas season, we deliver essential goods to merchants and residents in the inner city. The increased importance of this service is reflected by a succession of new records in terms of parcel volumes. The municipalities therefore need to become more closely involved in finding constructive solutions than they have so far been. For example, reserved parking areas for delivery vehicles could make a major contribution to reducing the pressure created by delivery operations.”
On peak days before Christmas, DPD delivers more than 300,000 parcels an hour with its fleet covering around 2,000,000km (1,240,000 miles) a day. The company also employs up to 4,000 additional workers in order to manage these record seasonal volumes.
