DHL Express has officially opened its new 32.5m (US$36.2m) logistics center at Hannover Airport in Germany. The project consolidated two former DHL sites into one 320,000ft2 facility, creating a single dispatch point for all time-sensitive and day-definite shipments.
Wolfgang P Albeck, chairman of the divisional board of DHL Express Germany, said, “With this new highly modernized site we now have an overall production space of about 6,000m2 (65,000ft2). This represents a doubling of the space previously available. Apart from that we have integrated a fully automated sorting system that is able to process 6,000 parcels per hour. This allows us to harmonize production processes for the different service offerings in a way that all three shipment flows can be processed simultaneously by the same system. On the whole, we achieve more efficient processing and can deliver a higher service quality for our clients in the region.”
DHL’s new logistics center also has four piers with direct loading and unloading capabilities for delivery trucks, meaning that drivers can load the vehicles with less physical effort. The offices and social areas have also been modernized, providing the site’s 200 employees with more comfortable facilities. Energy-saving materials such as LED lighting have also been used where possible.
