International research and development company Omnic has rolled out the first batch of parcel locker modules from its new assembly line in Milan on behalf of Swiss customer Chip.
Chip is developing an open multi-operator parcel locker network across Geneva and Omnic has developed a customized socket-independent solar-powered parcel locker for the project.
“Our solution serves neighborhoods, companies, local authorities and other institutions, going beyond traditional connected lockers by developing a shared network of public locations,” explained Chip founder and CEO Thomas Stenger. “These locations are accessible to all logistics operators, businesses and private individuals for dropping off and picking up parcels.
“Our lockers facilitate click and collect for local traders and craftspeople and offer a solution for temporary storage or exchanges between private individuals (C2C). We provide a range of lockers adapted to different needs, supported by efficient software that can be easily integrated with other systems via API.”
Omnic launched the facilities in Italy in March to enhance its manufacturing capacity and is exclusively focused on self-service solutions. In addition to parcel lockers, it manufactures solar-powered parcel lockers and solutions for self-service parcel drop-off.
Launching the Italian factory is part of Omnic’s strategy to develop localized production of its solutions in each market it operates in.
“Localized production replaces a centralized model of overseas megafactories producing goods at scale for global distribution,” commented Ann Snitko, Omnic’s chief product development officer. “Instead, it envisages networks of small and medium regional factories producing more customized goods on demand using robotics and even local materials to fulfill local market needs. This model allows Omnic to evolve rapidly in new markets, giving consumers the best self-service experience.”
