FedEx has opened a new fully integrated logistics facility in Amsterdam that will support both first- and last-mile operations in the city as well as offering direct connections to 45 European markets.
Located next to Schiphol Airport and integrated into the FedEx European road network via its road hub in Duiven, the facility features enhanced sorting capacity and innovative technologies that improve efficiency. It also has 20 charging stations for electric vehicles as part of FedEx’s wider fleet electrification strategy.
The 16,000m2 warehouse is double the size of the company’s previous location and the new sorting system has tripled the sorting capacity to 4,500 packages per hour. The sorting machine can also automatically detect whether a shipment that is subject to customs inspections is cleared for delivery.
The optimized sorting process allows packages to be directly loaded into more than 100 vehicles, reducing processing times and enabling drivers to hit the road earlier. The facility also accommodates 290 office employees. In select postal codes, customers will enjoy improved cut-off times, allowing for more time to prepare their shipments. Customers can also pick up their shipments at the new location.
Marius Penninks, vice president network operations at FedEx Europe, commented, “Our new Amsterdam facility is a crucial part of our first- and last-mile optimization strategy for the Netherlands and enables us to provide an even better service to our customers.
“We are also extremely proud that this new facility truly represents FedEx. Here, all our colleagues can work comfortably and safely, while customers enjoy a smoother experience when picking up or dropping off packages.”
