Post-Expo Hong Kong 2016 opened its doors today (Tuesday May 24) to showcase the latest technologies to enter the postal industry. The event, which is being held at Asia World Expo Center on May 24-26, has been combined with The Parcel Show this year. On display is everything from automated sorters, last-mile delivery solutions and international logistics services to dynamic routing, addressing and optimization software.
Alongside the exhibition, Jessie Ting, postmaster general of Hongkong Post, got the conference off to a flying start with a presentation on how the post has turned its business around. Ting explained how Hongkong Post had gone through troubled times in the slow-down around 2008 but has since moved into substantial profitability through good strategic development of new and existing market opportunities.
According to Tony Robinson, founder of Post-Expo and CEO of event organizer UKIP Media & Events, by 11:00hrs the exhibition had filled with people in search of the latest solutions. Robinson hosted a drinks reception on the first day to celebrate Post-Expo’s 20th anniversary. During the reception, which was sponsored by Chinese delivery provider SF Express, Robinson took to the stage to talk briefly about 20 years of Post-Expo, and how and why he looks forward to the next 20 years.
Talking about the early days when the exhibition was launched in 1997, Robinson said, “At that time the internet was still in its infancy. We still had dial-up ADSL, and internet shopping had not really even started. Back then, exhibitors were showcasing handheld data capture devices. Today, it’s all about robots, electric delivery vehicles which will soon be self driving and autonomous drones and last-mile delivery solutions, including smart locker boxes and supply chain partners. The posts are reliant on the technologies as opposed to the technologies being reliant on the posts. These technologies are the drivers of the industry, and Post-Expo, as the world’s leading postal industry technology event, is the ideal platform to showcase the latest innovations.”
Day 2 of the event (Wednesday May 25) will include conference sessions on cross-border e-commerce, first and last-mile logistics and the Live Innovation Showcase, which is new for 2016. The Live Innovation Showcase will see companies take to the stage to discuss new technologies such as agile optimization, the world’s first fully autonomous drone-based sorting center, addressing, big data and last-mile delivery robots.
