National postal operator New Zealand Post has officially opened its new operations center in the Te Rapa Gateway industrial park near the city of Hamilton in Waikato on New Zealand’s North Island.
The new hub will accommodate approximately 160 employees, including 45 delivery staff, 40 processing staff, 13 rural delivery drivers and 35 couriers. New Zealand Post signed an agreement with Civil Place Limited last year to lease the purpose-built 86,000ft² facility, which combines the post’s operations across the city.
Dean Horsup, regional delivery manager for Waikato and Bay of Plenty, New Zealand Post, said, “Bringing our operations together in one building is a significant investment for New Zealand Post’s distribution network in the wider Waikato region. In total, we’re investing between NZ$8m (US$5.8m) to NZ$12m (US$8.7m) over the next decade.
“The Waikato operations center sets up New Zealand Post for parcels growth as more people embrace online shopping and for the future delivery of mail in an efficient and sustainable manner.
“The new building easily accommodates much larger line-haul trucks, and the trucks only have to deliver to one place, rather than two, as was the case in Hamilton.”
One of the post’s new Paxster electric vehicles has also been stationed at the hub for training purposes. The four-wheeled Paxster will eventually be used for the combined delivery of parcels and mail in residential areas of New Zealand’s larger towns and cities. The roll-out of the vehicles started at the end of July in the town of Oamaru and will continue in phases over the next two years.
