From October 6, premium mail order customers will be able to receive their parcels on a Sunday as Austrian Post begins testing the validity of the service in four Vienna districts. If the trials prove successful, the whole of Vienna and the surrounding area and other provincial capitals will follow in the first half of 2025.
“It is part of Austrian Post’s innovative strength that we adapt to the needs of the market,” explained Walter Oblin, designated CEO, board member for mail and finance, Österreichische Post. “In 2015, we introduced Saturday delivery, which has become indispensable today. Now we are taking the next step and testing Sunday delivery. This not only makes us a first mover, but also brings together market requirements and innovation.”
To ensure that recipients are not surprised on Sunday, they will receive a special email or Post App notification in advance that their parcel will be delivered on Sunday. Austrian Post uses external transportation companies for the delivery itself, pays a Sunday surcharge and ensures that working hours are compensated.
“Austrians want to receive their online orders as quickly as possible and on their terms. We are therefore testing parcel delivery on Sundays for the first time. By starting in October, we are ideally equipped for the peak season around Black Friday and Christmas and our recipients will benefit from even faster delivery speeds,” confirmed Peter Umundum, chief parcel and logistics officer, Österreichische Post.
