Postal operator Omniva Latvia has launched a fundraising campaign with The Children’s Hospital Foundation to raise funds for 17 armchairs via the operator’s parcel terminals.
For every customer that collects their shipment from the parcel terminal within three hours of SMS notification in December, Omniva Latvia will donate €0.10 (US$0.12) toward the purchase of the new chairs for the Bērnu Klīniskā Universitātes Slimnīca (BKUS) NMPON children’s unit in Latvia’s capital, Riga.
Beāte Krauze-Čebotare, head of Omniva Latvia, commented, “Good work seems especially important this year, because so many people need support. December is usually a very busy time for us, when people buy gifts for their loved ones in addition to their daily purchases. Withdrawing your shipment within three hours is a very small gift from each of us for children who have to spend time in the hospital. Let’s help together!”
Approximately 200 children are examined daily at the BKUS NMPON unit. They are assigned an appropriate urgency category depending on their health condition. Generally, a child’s stay in NMPON does not exceed 24 hours. In this ward, children are placed for short-term treatment and observation, and if longer observation or treatment is required, the patient is admitted to one of the other wards of the hospital.
BKUS doesn’t only provide timely and high-quality medical care. Its activities are also aimed at raising the level of well-being and comfort of patients and parents. BKUS supports the presence of parents with the child, but due to the specifics of NMPON and the relatively short length of stay, parents are not offered a separate bed.
“At present, parents have to spend long hours sitting on a hard, plastic chair next to their child in the NMPON. Parents can deal with various inconveniences because of their children, but we all want to have as little inconvenience as possible at that time,” explained Liene Dambiņa, head of the Children’s Hospital Foundation. “That is why it is very nice that during the holiday Omniva comes to the rescue and together with its customers wants to take care of a valuable gift for parents – new chairs.”
