Reflecting a growth in demand for its services, NZ Post has launched a substantial program of infrastructure investment.
The first result of the new drive will be a ‘super depot’ for parcel handling in Grenada, Wellington, followed by a new processing center in Wiri, Auckland, and an upgrade to its Southern Operations Centre in Christchurch. All of these centers will benefit from an NZ$18m (US$11.7m) investment in new technology for sorting and scanning parcels.
“We know that customers really want complete visibility of where their parcel is at all times of its journey – and this technology will improve our ability to do this,” said NZ Post chief executive David Walsh.
“NZ Post is forecasting significant growth in the amount New Zealanders will buy online in the next decade – this was before the explosion in online shopping during the Covid-19 period.”
The Wellington depot will have a 10,440m2 processing floor, and will incorporate features to improve its environmental sustainability, including the future addition of a solar power installation linked to a battery storage solution.
