FedEx Express will open a new logistics facility northwest of Leipzig and an expanded, modernized facility in Karlsruhe – both in Germany – in the first quarter of 2024.
The new Leipzig building is being constructed for the 27 team members in Kabelsketal near Leipzig/Halle Airport. The site, which covers over 17,000m2, offers space for a warehouse of around 3,400m2 and an office area of over 850m2. There will be six loading bays for regular trucks, 63 for vans and six for 7.5-ton trucks. Additionally, 12 charging stations will be installed for electric vans and six for employees’ cars. The sorting capacity will double compared with the previous setup. A new loading and unloading concept is expected to reduce traffic in the warehouse, helping to improve safety. A suburban railway connection close to the site has also been included to ensure good connections to the cities of Leipzig and Halle.
The facility in Karlsruhe will be expanded and modernized on the existing 3,600m2 site. Once operational, it will have a higher handling capacity. At approximately 2,500m2, the warehouse will be double the size of the current building and have a truck loading ramp as well as 24 loading bays to load and unload shipments. The sorting process in the warehouse is largely automated, which will reduce the sorting time by around a third and almost double the sorting capacity. The height-adjustable and extendable conveyor belt also facilitates the handling of consignments. Three new jobs will be created as part of the expansion, with 17 team members currently working at the site.
“The locations in Leipzig and Karlsruhe are further proof of our long-term growth ambitions,” said Stefan Dries, vice president of ground operations for FedEx Express Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Nordics. “Following the modernization of our air gateway in Stuttgart and the opening of our location in Nufringen, we are also optimizing our processes at these locations in order to offer our customers even better service and support in expanding their businesses.”
In early summer 2022, FedEx Express opened its facility in Nufringen. The facility reportedly offers improved express services with later pickup times and increased capacity. In spring 2023, the company also opened its expanded Air Gateway Stuttgart. According to the company, the new setup is well equipped to meet the export and import demands of customers in the region due to its higher handling speed and increased capacity.
