DPD Estonia is investing in 70 robots to help increase efficiency, accuracy and flexibility in parcel sorting operations, becoming the first logistics company in the Baltics to roll out the technology.
According to DPD, the automated robotic sorting solution will help the company better handle fluctuations in parcel volumes, such as the more than 20% increase during the Christmas season.
“The biggest advantage of the robotic solution is the significant improvement in parcel throughput capacity,” said Remo Kirss, DPD Estonia CEO. “This allows us to handle larger volumes and provide even faster and more accurate service compared to our existing sorting processes.”
The sorting process automation will occur in two stages – firstly focusing on shipments destined for parcel lockers, and then the existing sorting line will be upgraded in the spring to enhance sorting capacity further.
According to DPD Estonia, the robotic solution is a high-tech system that is entirely new and different to previously used methods. While such technology is still relatively new, it offers a significantly shorter payback period compared to traditional solutions.
Changing employee roles
It is estimated that sorting efficiency will triple with the robots, taking the speed and accuracy of the process to a new level. “With the robotic solution, we can manage fluctuating volumes without hiring additional seasonal workers. This ensures service stability throughout the year,” Kirss added.
The introduction of robots does not mean a reduction in workforce but rather a shift in their responsibilities, Kirss explained: “Employees will focus more on technical tasks, such as monitoring the robots and managing the sorting process. Reduced human intervention in sorting minimizes the risk of errors and increases overall workflow efficiency.”
