UK-based postal operator Whistl has opened a new 54,000ft2 delivery depot in Tannochside, Scotland. The new facility will replace Whistl’s existing depot in Coatbridge and will more than triple the operator’s capacity in the region. The new hub is highly automated, but will still employ 150 staff in operations and delivery roles, as well as through its apprenticeship scheme.
Newly elected Scottish National Party MP, Phil Boswell, joined Nick Wells, CEO of Whistl, at the ceremony to officially open the new depot.
Wells said, “The tripling of our capacity in Scotland with Tannochside will allow Whistl to further expand our customer base and continue to provide a high-quality and cost-efficient service. We are delighted to be investing further in Scotland, enabling more businesses and the public sector to benefit from our cost-efficient postal solutions and dedicated account management. This investment demonstrates our commitment to, and leading role within, the UK postal market.”
Whistl has operated in Scotland for nine years and collects and sorts an average of two million items of mail each week, before handing over to Royal Mail for delivery. Across the UK, the company handles 3.75 billion items of mail per year.
Whistl collects mail and packets from 250 individual collection points across Scotland, with 1,200 clients in the public and private sector including Aegon and Standard Life. There are daily collections from as far as Inverness and Elgin, with the Western Isles Council being the most remote customer, using Whistl for its hybrid mail services.
