DHL’s Customer Solutions & Innovation team have released a whitepaper looking at how supply chain management will be a key driver for the engineering and manufacturing (E&M) sector in 2025 and beyond.
The manufacturing sector accounts for approximately 17% of GDP and 14% of employment globally, with 70% of the global trade volume originating from the industry. The report, titled Building the World A DHL Perspective on Future Engineering & Manufacturing Supply Chains, emphasizes that supply chain concepts need to be regionalized, interconnected, resilient, sustainable and agile to cope with trends such as shifting markets, customization and increased compliance.
The report outlines six influential trends from the position of economics, the environment, politics, society and technology, and their implications on the industry. Based on these key findings, it derives the sector’s respective responses and the five implications for future supply chains.
Reg Kenney, president engineering and manufacturing, DHL Customer Solutions & Innovation, said, “Generally speaking, we expect that supply chain managers will have to deal with even higher complexity in the future. Customers will expect a broader, more customized product portfolio.
“A combination of shifting growth markets, thus more suppliers, a lack of qualified workforce and new technologies, will have companies rethink their current supply chain models.”
