Deutsche Post DHL is testing a new same-day delivery service between Berlin and Hamburg in Germany using its own long-distance Postbus network. The new Postbus Courier service is available to private users as well as smaller business customers.
Achim Dünnwald, CEO of mail communication at Deutsche Post and designated head of DHL Parcel, said, “Postbus Courier is a new same-day delivery option that gives our customers another choice, using our intercity bus network for shipping particularly urgent items. Berlin and Hamburg are the first cities offering the new service but we are currently considering others for next year.”
To use the new service, customers fill in and print out on-screen shipping documents before taking them with their parcel to the Postbus Courier service point at the main omnibus station in Berlin or Hamburg. There, they hand over their parcel to the service staff member, who places the item in a bag, seals it and stows the bag securely in the Postbus. Recipients can pick up items on the same day at the arrival destination or have a third party collect the package after proving their legitimacy through appropriate identification.
Same-day parcel transport using Postbus Courier will be offered once per day, Monday to Friday. The service will cost 20 (US$22) and must be paid for in cash at the parcel drop-off location at the service point. Parcels can be no larger than the size of Packset L, or 45cm (17.7in) x 35cm (13.8in) x 20cm (7.9in). Maximum weight is 10kg (22 lb). Roll-shaped formats will be allowed.
