Securing and controlling access to street mailboxes has been the focus of a new proof-of-concept project carried out by Prime Competence on behalf of a major European post. The program highlights the substantial benefits for fraud prevention and dynamic secure access control to authorized users.
Fleur Baars, the consultant leading the program for Prime Competence, said, “The humble mailbox has changed little in the last 100 years and simply cannot provide the security features required in this information age. Our ambitions with this program were high; we aimed to explore how the mailbox could be adapted utilizing the latest technological developments to provide greater security, control, information and ease of access management. At the same time, we considered the operational requirements, administration and existing processes.
“Preventing, or at least detecting, invoice fraud was at the forefront of our minds; a type of fraud that is on the increase for postal systems around the world, whereby criminals gain access to mailboxes in order to steal invoices and re-issue them with alternate bank details. We learnt so much more though, and now we want to share the results with other posts as best-practice in their own programs,” concluded Fleur.
Prime Competence has now produced a briefing paper that covers this proof-of-concept along with findings that improve many areas of postal operations, including securing other postal assets, access and control management and new revenue stream potentials.
