Parcel delivery provider DPDgroup has submitted its first progress report for the United Nations Global Compact initiative, which encourages global business leaders to adopt sustainable policies and report on their impact.
As part of its sustainability efforts, DPDgroup has committed to making every parcel delivered carbon-neutral, at no additional cost to customers, via its DrivingChange program. Since 2013, DPDgroup has succeeded in reducing its CO2 emissions by more than 10% and the carrier currently makes up nearly 5% of the European voluntary carbon offset market.
Paul-Marie Chavanne, chairman of GeoPost/DPDgroup, said, “As the second-largest player the European Express Parcel market, we are taking a pragmatic approach. We are focusing on areas where we can make the biggest difference, namely the neutrality of our deliveries and delivery solutions in urban areas. By concentrating our efforts, we have already succeeded in reducing our CO2 emissions by 10.1% per parcel since 2013. In constant search for innovation, we thus facilitate our customers’ commitments on climate change.”
More than 300 employees monitor DPD’s CO2 performance indicators across Europe using a specific tool that precisely evaluates the environmental impact against current standards. Each year, an audit is carried out by external firm Mazars to verify the adequacy of the calculation model and the quantity of CO2 emitted.
DPDgroup voluntarily offsets 100% of the remaining transport emissions by purchasing carbon credits every year since 2012. In 2016, the company offset the equivalent of more than 863,000 tons of CO2, which it claims makes it the world leader in voluntary offsetting in the courier, express, parcel (CEP) sector. As a result, the equivalent of 714,000MWh of energy, or the annual consumption of 250,000 households, was produced through offset projects supported by DPDgroup in 2016.
