Deutsche Post DHL has put its 67,000m2 parcel sortation center in Aschheim in Germany into operation. The new parcel sortation center has a sorting capacity of 40,000 parcels per hour and good access to the regional road and rail network. DHL has invested a low three-digit-million euro amount in the new facility.
A photovoltaic system on the roof helps the parcel center to be partially self-sufficient with green electricity. The center is also supplied with heat via climate-friendly district heating, which is provided by a regional energy supplier. The energy supply company produces most of the thermal energy from geothermal energy. The parcel center also has a green roof, which acts as thermal insulation to save energy in winter and shield it from the heat in the summer. In addition, the greenery has a sound-absorbing effect.
The new parcel center is connected to the existing DHL parcel center in Aschheim via a tunnel under Klausnerstraße with a shared entrance and parking area. The existing center can sort up to 32,000 items per hour. With these two parcel centers, the Aschheim site has a sorting capacity of up to 72,000 items per hour. Around 600 people are employed at the Aschheim site, and the company expects to create around 500 new jobs for the region.
Nikola Hagleitner, member of the board of management for post and parcel Germany at Deutsche Post DHL Group, said, “With the new parcel center, we have urgently needed additional sorting capacity to supply people in the greater Munich area and in large parts of Upper Bavaria in a parcel market that is still growing. We make an important contribution to climate protection with innovative sorting technology and an ecologically sustainable construction concept. In addition, our company is creating around 500 new jobs for the region that are bound by collective bargaining agreements and subject to social security contributions.”
Robert Ertl, the second mayor of the municipality of Aschheim, added, “This state-of-the-art facility will offer citizens and Deutsche Post DHL an efficient and secure service. It will also boost our economy and create job opportunities.”
