Sustainability non-profit Smart Freight Centre and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) have released guidance to advance the quantification of logistics emissions at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
Launched in partnership with over 30 organizations, such as Posti, this consortium intends to achieve net-zero logistics by launching actionable and implementable guidance while helping transportation companies report and reduce their emissions.
According to the consortium, there were previously no clear rules for reporting emissions per shipment for the entire transportation chain. By increasing the transparency and comparability of emissions data and implementing joint calculation rules, the group asserts that logistics can be organized more climate-consciously.
Anna Heino, head of climate and environment at Posti, said, “Emission data are still fragmented and incomplete, and it is essential to find the right level of accuracy, where the accounting does not impose an unreasonable burden, especially on small transport companies, but is reliable and of sufficient quality to enable transport buyers to make sustainable choices. It would be very important for all companies to follow this common reporting method. A large group of the world’s largest trade and transport operators, such as Amazon, Nestlé, Unilever, Maersk, DHL and UPS, have also been involved in the development work.
