Hermes Germany has announced that it will introduce peak surcharges for shipments in the months of November and December 2018.
The carrier also adjusted the shipping prices for business customers at the beginning of March by an average of 4.5%. Hermes claims that most of the price adjustment will be spent on last-mile wage and labor costs.
Thomas Horst, managing director sales at Hermes Germany, said, “The costs in parcel logistics and especially in the last mile have been rising disproportionately for a long time. Nevertheless, we would like to continue to offer our customers and clients the best possible services and to continuously improve our services.
“However, the necessary investments, especially in labor costs for our deliverers, can only be realistically modeled with a sustainable price structure.”
While online shipments increasing nationwide, Hermes is also finding it increasingly difficult to find enough employees.
“This is partly due to the general demographic development in Germany,” added Horst. “On the other hand, the job of the deliverer must also become more financially attractive, so that possible bottlenecks do not even arise. This requires adequate shipping prices.”
