Maersk will add 300 heavy-duty electric trucks to its North America network between 2023 and 2025.
The trucks will be operated on Maerskās road freight network using freight mobility solution company Einrideās digital road freight operating system and charging solutions. The vehicles will join Maerskās subsidiary for warehousing, distribution and transportation in North America, called Performance Team. Maerskās long-term goal in North America is to move toward a fully electric trucking fleet to offer customers an environmentally friendly alternative for short-haul trucking.
The initial batch of Einrideās e-trucks are Class 8 8TT Gen 3 manufactured by automotive company BYD. Einrideās digital road freight operating system centralizes decision-making by providing data integration with full transparency across the electromobility spectrum.
Vincent Clerc, CEO of ocean and logistics at A P Moller, Maersk, said, āOur customers are looking for tangible actions on sustainable supply chains ā not just conceptual. Todayās order is an important step in building our end-to-end, landside decarbonization foundation while also addressing customersā inland transportation pain points. Maersk has a comprehensive decarbonization plan in motion for our Ocean activities which represent 93% of all company-related emissions. This order marks the expansion of our ambitions to cover all services across transport modes.ā
Robert Falck, CEO of Einride, said, āThis is one of the biggest deals ever made to make transportation sustainable, and it comes at a critical time. Not only is the road freight industry responsible for close to 8% of all global CO2 emissions ā a number that will continue to grow if a cost-effective change is not made today ā but you also have a world that is more aware than ever before about the urgent need to shift to electric. I admire Maersk for its boldness in leading the way ā for standing out in its commitments as a shipper to tangibly make the transition happen.ā
